Triage at Work


A great sounding word, but exactly what is it? I found out a few days ago, while taking a certification class for Wilderness and Remote Access First Aid. (If you’re ever lost in the woods and fall out of a tree, I’m your gal).

During the course, I found out triage is the prioritization of patient treatment in order to maximize the number of survivors. Sounds like serious business to me.

I soon learned, (the hard way), that the sorting of victims according to the urgency of their care or need, takes a great deal of advance planning. Let me tell you what I mean by learning the hard way.

Our instructor for the Wilderness First Aid certification believed role-playing was the most effective way to teach us what we really needed to know. As a certified trainer, I definitely agree with his methods, and his reasoning.

Humans learn from experience at a much deeper level than from reading or listening. This is why I try to build hands-on interaction into my speaking engagements when possible.

On the last segment of our first-aid training, three participants in the course were taken outside, away from the rest of us, and given a scenario they were to act out. The remaining trainees, myself included, waited for the setup. While we waited, we thought we’d get smart, and pre-plan what we’d do once we came upon the scene.

We delegated a leader, we agreed on pre-determined teams to split into, packed supplies, and assumed we were ready for whatever the instructor threw at us. Were we wrong. None of us could have anticipated the tangle that waited in the woods.

Not until later, did I realize how much this experience would translate into best business practices. Tomorrow, I’ll tell the next part of this story, and explain how triage at work can determine success or failure.
