Do You Like the Sound of Your Own Voice?

Sometimes, when I listen to myself talking, it drives me crazy. Does this ever happen to you? Have you ever caught the sound of your own voice mid-sentence, only to groan inside at what you hear? Maybe you catch a whine, a grumble, a complaint, or gasp…a tidbit of gossip.

It happens to me too often. Especially on the job.

There’s something about most work environments that seed chronic complaints. Topics vary, but on a typical day, you hear most of them at some point.

“My boss is a jerk.” “No one else works as hard as me.” “It’s too hot.” “It’s too cold.” “My head hurts.” “My back’s sore.” “I’m tired.” “I didn’t sleep good.” “I don’t feel like doing this today.” “I’m not appreciated.” “I want to do something fun.” “I wish other people would do their job right.” “I’m sick of fixing other people’s mistakes.”

I’ve even heard a time or two, “You can’t fix stupid.”

Does any of this sound familiar? Back and forth we go. Sometimes we sound like we’re trying to outdo each other in finding the most things to complain about.

I can promise, in my three decades of work, I’ve spoken everything quoted above too many times to count. Ouch!

In a season of resolve, I do believe it’s important to consider our habits. Though I’ve come a long way in improving my life, I’ll never be perfect. Therefore, I need to keep working at it. So, I resolve to watch my tongue more closely.

Will I mess up? Sure, but I won’t excuse myself. I will not try, but I will focus on more pure, good, noble, and lovely as I prepare for a spectacular year with the people I work with. Isn’t that what I’d like others to do for me?

Philippians 2:14-15 (NIV)

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky….”
